26 June-07 July 2013, FIELD EXPERIMENT
The entire Wave Engineering Laboratory team organises field experiment at the south-western part of the Island of Aegna, Tallinn Bay. The goals are as follows:
- to identify and quantify water transport by ship wakes towards the coast and related effects
- to record velocity profiles in highly nonlinear ship wakes in order to properly quantify the potential of ship wakes to relocate sediment with different grain size
- to quantify run-up of leading waves from fast ferries and to associate these with the properties of approaching waves
- to further understand the structure of ship wakes by means of distinguishing the stationary parts of ship wakes from the nonstationary wave system
- to quantify wave-driven transport of gravel of different size along and across the coast and associated changes to the coastal profile under the impact of ship wakes and wind waves.
The measurement devices include:
- two high-resolution echosounders to record the position of the water surface
- two Nortek Vector current meters for high-precision recording of 3D velocity field near seabed
- two Nortek Aquadopp profilers to record velocity profiles at in the near-bottom layer with a thickness of about 1 m
- high-resolution pressure sensors to record wave-induced pressure variations an electronic run-up meter.
The devices are mounted on two about 4.5 m high tripods deployed in 2.7 m and 1.3 m deep water, respectively. The experiment also includes video monitoring and manual recording of run-up and run-down heights of single waves at a fixed point of an almost plane section of the coast, frequent profiling of five selected coastal profiles in the vicinity of the measurement site, video recording of the run-up process along a section of the beach and measurements of current-driven Lagrangian transport in the surface layer in the vicinity of the experiment site.
