Applied Wave Mathematics

Applied Wave Mathematics

This edited volume addresses the importance of mathematics in wave-related research, and its tutorial style contributions provide

educational material for courses or seminars. It presents highlights from research carried out at the Centre for Nonlinear Studies in

Tallinn, Estonia, the Centre of Mathematics for Applications in Oslo, Norway, and by visitors from the EU project

CENS-CMA. The example applications discussed include wave propagation in inhomogeneous solids, liquid crystals in mesoscopic

physics, and long ship waves in shallow water bodies. Other contributions focus on specific mathematical approaches, namely

the pseudospectral method, the treatment of Maxwell equations, and scalar conservation laws.

NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF WAVES AND FRONTS IN INHOMOGENEOUS SOLIDSBook1

This book shows the advances methods of numerical simulation of waves and fronts propagation in inhomogeneous solids and introduces related important ideas associated with the application of numerical methods for these problems. Great care has been taken throughout the book to seek a balance between the thermomechanical analysis and numerical techniques. It is suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in continuum mechanics and engineering. Necessary prerequisites for this text are basic continuum mechanics and thermodynamics. Some elementary knowledge of numerical methods for partial differential equations is also preferable.

The highlights of CENS activities in 2003-2007 have been published in the booklet
